It's a fantastic card for an absurdly low price, will handle all 12 drives you're planning to use, and lets you do either hardware RAID or software RAID with the same card.

This quirk of the card is one of the reasons why old posts on the FreeNAS forums insist that the card isn't acceptable for ZFS/FreeNAS however full SMART data is available through the card with no issues once you understand the syntax. So for the first disk on the card, I do "smartctl -a /dev/twa0 -d 3ware,0". You will need to specify device "/dev/twaN" where N is the order of the card (for a single card, it's always /dev/twa0), and additionally "-d 3ware,X" where X is the channel on the card of the drive you want. Second, getting at SMART data requires an odd command in linux for example "smartctl -a /dev/sdg" will not work. The first lets bare drives be passed to the OS, the second prevents the card from chopping up drives into 2.2TB or smaller chunks. There's a couple of caveats for you to be aware of.įirst, you need to configure the card to enable "Export JBOD", and to disable Auto-Carving. It supports drives larger than 2TB with the most recent firmware firmware is freely available from LSI who owns them now but likely the card will be already updated. This is TRUE JBOD, not single-disk RAID0 which it can also do I've multiple times connected a drive with data to mine and it has passed it through unmolested to the OS. The card is capable of all RAID modes except RAID60 (but will do RAID6), can do hot spares, and can also do JBOD/Passthrough. This is a SATA II RAID controller card given that you're running spinning disks SATA II will be more than adequate. However, since you're using 12 SATA drives, I'm about to save you a lot of money. Also, I personally need SAS ports because of the drives I'm using. I went with those because right now H200s are going for around $30-40 each on eBay, and the cheapest I could find a 9201-16i for was $290. Just did this math myself, and I went with a pair of Dell PERC H200s which can be flashed over to 9211-8i with little trouble - there's a couple of guides floating about for it. r/HomeNetworking - Simpler networking advice. r/pfsense - for all things pfsense ('nix firewall) Might be able to find things useful for a lab. r/hardwareswap - Used hardware, swap hardware.
